Margaret River is officially the World’s best-performing wine region for 2025 after topping the International Wine and Spirits Competition.

It outperforms long-established destinations such as France, Italy and Spain, which highlights how intense Australia’s wine scene is right now.

Vibrant vineyard rows basking in the sunshine, a stunning destination for winter wine tours, a popular thing to enjoy in Margaret River when it's cooler.

The timing aligns neatly with the World’s 50 Best Vineyards awards ceremony arriving in Western Australia this November, marking the first time the event takes place outside Europe and the Americas.

The IWSC judges tasted more than 12,000 wines from 90 countries before selecting just 40 global trophy winners.

Australia took ten of these trophies.

Nine came from Margaret River alone, which accounts for 22.5 per cent of all trophies this year, despite producing only a small percentage of Australia’s total wine output.

This result places the region in a class of its own and strengthens its reputation as one of the World’s most consistent fine wine producers.

Cabernet Sauvignon stood out firmly.

An array of wine bottles in a wooden rack showcasing red, white, and rosé options, highlighting the variety found on wine tours in Hobart.

Xanadu Wines’ 2023 Cabernet scored 98 points, becoming the highest-scoring Australian wine of the entire competition.

The bottle sits at about $45, showing that world-class wines don’t always come with a high price tag.

Other trophy-winning cabernets from the region reinforce Margaret River’s reputation for producing structured, balanced and reliable reds.

Chardonnay also performed well. Deep Woods Estate secured trophies for its 2024 and 2023 Reserve Chardonnay, both scoring 97 points.

Nocturne’s SV Forrest Chardonnay received 96 points, alongside Happs and its 2023 Three Hills Chardonnay.

These results reflect the region’s ability to produce consistently high-quality whites shaped by its coastal climate and ideal growing conditions.

The only trophy winner from outside Margaret River was Morris of Rutherglen in Victoria, recognised for its Cellar Reserve Grand Muscat NV.

This adds variety to Australia’s success and highlights the depth of quality across the country’s wine regions.
